Anger Book (Spread Format)

Description of Projects: What, Why, How

Projects: Why? What? How?

  1. Perception (I am a Story film)
    1. What: Perception, a film that questions what is normal (in behavior,
      looks, etc).
    2. Why: Merriam-Webster defines the word “normal” as “usual or
ordinary: not strange.” We as humans want to fit in with our peers. We buy trendy clothes, cut our hair, and act in similar ways to achieve this and to not be labeled different or weird. But what constitutes someone or something as normal? Why is weird bad?
    3. How: This film is a series of images I took in Union Square, a place known for attracting a wide variety of characters. The images tell a story about a guy who is considered “crazy” and “weird” who interacts with “normal” people. What is interesting is how the children do not have preconceived ideas about this guy, they happily sing and dance with him while most of the adults stand and watch.
  2. Me Against Myself (Projection film)
    1. What: Me Against Myself is a film about my daily struggles with
anxiety and depression. The aim of the film is to convey to the viewer
the overwhelming pressure and chaos that comes with this disease.
    2. Why: Mental illness is still heavily stigmatized. Mostly because people
are ashamed and try to hide it. When I was in high school I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Anxiety. It is something I have to live with for the rest of my life. A lot of people who suffer from depression and anxiety are frequently misunderstood by others. People assume we are being dramatic or overreacting when they really don’t understand what we go through. I wanted the viewer of my film to feel for a few minutes what depression and anxiety really is like.
    3. How: By projecting images onto a white wall and editing them to unsettling music I created the feeling of uncomfort and chaos. This is meant to simulate a combination of depression and anxiety. Ultimately this would be an art instillation where a person walks into an enclosed space where the film plays on all four walls to make one feel trapped.
  3. Untitled (Social Commentary Book)
    1. What: This is a coffee table book of a collection of images I’ve taken
from around New York City. They will deal with various topics and show the irony I see in daily life. Some of the pictures will have accompanying commentary.
    2. Why: I really enjoy capturing moments (in photographs) that make people think. These moments are not staged and are gone within seconds. When I’m out walking around I pay a lot of attention to my surroundings and the people that are in them. I find people fascinating and so they tend to be a large portion of my photography.
    3. How: By taking my camera with me everywhere I go I end up takingthousands of pictures, some are randomly taken and some are of specific subjects. Going back to review the pictures I sometimes discover things not even I had noticed from before. I compiled the best photos into a coffee table book.
  1. Craft Magazine (Magazine)
    a. What: Craft magazine is a craft beer magazine geared towards a young hip audience of all genders.

    b. Why: As a woman who loves beer it can be difficult to navigate the craft beer world; a world currently dominated by men. This means that most of the beer magazines out there are geared towards one gender while all looking the same. My goal was to create a layout and style that was gender neutral and more fun than what is already out there.

    c. How: I kept the focus on beer and lifestyle that is not gender specific as well as using a gender-neutral color pallet.

  2. Thriftr (branding)
    1. What: Thriftr is an app geared towards students living in New York
City that are looking for ways to save money. It will have a variety of resources including discounted tickets, money managing tips and tricks, freebies, and more.
    2. Why: New York City is one of the most expensive cities to live in in the United States. Being a student paying your way through school makes this even tougher. Everyone wants to save money but not many know where to start or what resources to use. This is where my expertise comes in.
    3. How: Luckily all my life I have been raised and surrounded by people who know how to stretch a dollar. Because of this I am basically a professional penny pincher. The resources for this app will be my own advice and “life hacks” mixed with other things I find.
  3. Thanks Nana (branding)
    1. What: A witty and comical series of shirts and merchandise that
juxtaposes images of my nana with some of her quirkiest sayings/life
      advice.
    2. Why: I wanted to pay homage to one of the most important people in
my life, my Nana. I struggled with ideas exactly how to do this until I realized she is truly a character on her own. Standing in at 4ft 10 and she isn’t afraid to speak her mind. My family has begun collecting her best sayings about handling life.
    3. How: I couldn’t think of a better way than to put Nana’s advice on t- shirts and merchandise for daily reminders of Nana’s wisdom. Eventually this would turn into a quirky shop.
  4. Flood Wall St (poster series)
  1. What: A series of posters for the 2015 climate change and capitalism march in New York City. As well as photographs of them wheat pasted up in Brooklyn.
  2. Why: It is hard to deny that the root of the climate crisis is our capitalistic system where the top 1% are exploiting communities and their natural resources for monetary gain with no respect for the environment. This is a subject I feel strongly about, witnessing it first hand. Because of this I designed a series of posters.
  3. How: All of the posters are silk screened and then wheat pasted up onto buildings and walls in Brooklyn. They will be photographed and compiled into an informal zine.

Project descriptions

SUM-infographic poster

What
Infographic poster that shows the detail of Danny Eagleman’s except in Sum.

Why
The author is a neuroscientist with literary leanings, he reconstituted our life not chronologically but by category of activity, for example "six days clipping your nails. Fifteen months looking for lost items. Eighteen months waiting in line". The cataloguing leads to a twist that turns the whole thing around and - in a pattern that is repeated - sends us scurrying back to this life.

How
The 1st version is to form like a tree-like construction which representing a life.
The 2nd version is inspired by the structure of calender. Using number to construct a pattern. The final version is using numbers to make a pattern to present a feeling of sequence.

Identity Design

What
This is identity design for the National Archives Foundation. The National Archives Foundation is an independent nonprofit that increases public awareness of the National Archives, inspires a deeper appreciation of our country’s heritage, and encourages citizen engagement in our democracy. As the National Archives’ nonprofit partner, the Foundation generates financial and creative support for National Archives exhibitions, public programs, and educational initiatives, introducing America’s records to people around the U.S. and the world.

Why
With a recent name change (Foundation for the National Archives to National Archives Foundation), a new logo is essential. The client are looking to develop a new visual identity to modernize the brand, and match the organization’s new energy and direction. The logo needs to reflect their desire to reach and engage contemporary audiences, and attract all segments of the public to exhibitions, programs, membership, and online initiatives. When someone thinks of the National Archives, they think old, dusty pieces of parchment paper, like the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. People think about warehouses full of boxes and boxes of papers. The clients want to change that.
The National Archives Foundation wants to create a new logo that seeks to create a feeling that
inspires citizens to explore their past. This is an opportunity for the Foundation to continue our goal of making Archives records more accessible to the public. They want to inspire citizens to explore the past and cultivate a deeper understanding of their civic history by engaging them in an authentic and meaningful way.

How
I take a common symbol as a base idea and create a fresh new look. The concept of my logo is to emphasize the idea of connection and path—which is the the mission of National Archives Foundation—providing a path for public to be engaged and access to the Archives records.
The stripes are the element from the American flag. They are connecting into a star to show the feelings of dynamic and motion which is constantly moving.

REPEAT Magazine (Shakespeare Sonnet, Time)

What
A editorial, logo and cover design of an experimental magazine. There are three issue: music, time, sound. The Sound issue is about my project Shakespeare Sonnet, which using typographic to show the rhythm of sonnet. The Time issue show my project, Time Is Simultaneity , which is a typographic sculpture.

Why
To me, there are no distinction between past, present and future. Everything that has happened, is happening and will happen are all there.

How
The logo is inspired by the repeat sign in music.
The idea of my Time is inspired by the design of the volume bars which it is increased by stacking up increments. Each level of paper represents an event. The higher the level is, the further the future it is in. And vice versa. The lines between are only link to the same level but no upper or lower levels, interpret the ideas that events following a given event can not be in direct cause-effect relationship.

Shakespeare Book Cover

What
This is a book cover series of Shakespeare’s works.

Why
There are different human weaknesses in these three plays. I pick each play a word to present it. For Hamlet, it is hestitation; for Macbeth, it is desire; for King Lear, it is vanity. Each treatment of my typography interpret the word I choose.

How
Instead of using a very dramatic look that with big contrast and images, i use purely typography to present my idea. I also use the primary color just to show a neutral feeling to the audience.

Davines Hair

What
Branding project.

Why
Hair product usually gives an artificial feeling full of chemical.
therefore, my design is to deliver the sense of natural.

How
My design is inspired by the landscapes of Japanese garden, showing a sense of Zen.

Different But Equal- Entertainment Animal poster campaign

What
This is a poster campaign about animals used for entertainment. Entertainment animals are those that perform or are displayed publicly to amuse people. These animals appear in circuses, carnivals, animal shows and exhibits, amusement and wildlife theme parks, aquariums, zoos, museums, fairs, and motion pictures and television programs. Although these venues are diverse, they all have one thing in common: They use animals for human purposes.

Why
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated––Mahatma Gandhi. Animals are not actors or circus clown. They are not ours to use. They have their rights to live happily and free,  just like human. In the animal rights point of view, wild animals should live in the wild, unaffected by human interference, and not be forced to do things that do not come naturally to them. While in the animal welfare point of view, exotic animals are not housed, trained, and cared for in a humane manner particularly at circuses, carnivals, and roadside zoos and parks. The animals at these venues frequently are treated poorly, living in deplorable conditions without access to veterinary care. Performing animals must be trained to be
entertainers, and many trainers use cruel and abusive methods.

How
Using the elements of each venues to show the cruelty reality behind these sweet cute impressions people have about them. Thus to promote the idea of not supporting animal entertainment business.

Different But Equal- Nikukyu cafe

What
This is a branding project of a pet cafe which is about companion animals. Pet cafe is a fairly new concept in western country. The first cat cafe was opened in Taiwan. And the concept widespread in Japan (cat, dog ,owl, rabbit, goat, bird). Animals that live in the cafe are up for adoption. Animals cafe provide the people that cannot have their own pet the opportunity to interact with animals while enjoying their coffee.

Why
Many less fortunate lost or abandoned animals end up in pitiful shelters that are nothing more than shacks without walls or other protection from the elements, where animals are often left to die from exposure, disease, or fights with other animals. While in the pet trade, it fuel the companion animal overpopulation crisis by bringing more animals into a world that is already bursting at the seams with unwanted ones. The pet trade treats animals as mere moneymaking commodities to mass produce and peddle for profit. Animals are routinely denied socialization, exercise, and even basic veterinary care in this cruel, money-hungry industry. Worst of all, the pet trade encourages the public to view animals as impulse purchases no different from fashion accessories that are acquired on a whim and discarded when the novelty wears off—rather than thinking, feeling beings who deserve love and respect.

How
Through the loving images of my cat as a star of my cafe, I want to show people that a pet from shelter is as wonderful as in a shop. The brochure is to educating pet owners for  common pet behavioral problems which to reduce the rate of pet abandonment. The can food design is to spread the message of adopt rather than buy. Since many pet owners are more likely to get another pet.

Description of Projects What? Why? How?

Through the Viewfinder (I am a Story Project)
What?
Who doesn’t love their bedroom? I have grown up in the same bedroom all 21 years of my life and it has gone through many changes along side with me. From a complete room makeover to, my sister moving out, and now my own little space to call my own. Just from the images of my room till this day, it says many things about my personality and the type of person I am. Come into my personal sanctuary to get to know me.

Why?
To tell my story of my own child perspective, I invite you into my bedroom. I feel it is the most personal space anyone has to offer of themselves. I want you to feel like you are in my room and wanting to know more about me just by seeing all the things I have. My story within my own room with camera angles from a child’s point of view. This story is to bring you back to when you were a child and seeing your viewpoint completely different from how you see reality today.

How?
A child’s perspective were an adult never wonders. In a room that I have grown up in all my life has many different viewpoints. Taking these images bought me back to being a child and that is what this video is about. Bringing myself out of the box and seeing a room that I have gone to everyday in a different perspective. I captured many images but selecting the few that told my story. Collecting all the images and creating a frame by frame video with childlike music representing the outlook of my bedroom. Giving people more of an insight of who I am.

A Fleeting Moment (Projection Project)
What?
Projection project about my own experience with death. Death can take an emotional toll on a person and everyone experiences it in their life. It is my own story of how I felt about the passing of my grandmother and my dog. How their deaths still linger within me from time to time and how overwhelming the feeling can be when losing loved ones.

Why?
It was a way to express my emotions outside myself and do something that was so sensitive to me that scared me every time I talked about it. Expressing my story through the projection and onto the wall; showing my emotions to the class and letting it all out. Really coming out of my comfort zone and overbearing this weight of fear. Through the projection really expressed my story and the weight it has over me.

How?
My story of my grandmother and dogs death splashed in a projection across the wall. My own experience of death repeated in print and projection in different typefaces with black and white shapes. Something completely out of my comfort zone and a very sensitive topic for myself. That repetition representing the overwhelming weight of how losing someone means to me. Taking lots of pictures and videos to capture the moment. Finalizing all the videos to capture in one that would tell my story. With additive affect of music within the video and an addition of images put into a coffee top magazine as the final project.

Left-handed Museum
What?
It is hard being in a society were you are the minority and have to form to it. Everything in society is made to be comfortable for a right-handed person but very little is made specially for left-handed people. Left-handed people have to adjust to every object to do just what a right-handed person can do. Only some objects are made to feel like we are apart of society but in some cases it makes us stand out more like that one left-handed desk in school. So showing society how different a world would be if it was a left-handed society.

Why?
Some people I know wonder how it is to be left-handed and most do not know much about being left-handed. They do not know the history, the facts, and the myths behind being left-handed in a right-handed society. Me being a left-hander myself know from experience the struggle that left-handed people have to go through everyday. It becomes a struggle cause we have to form to society and there is no way of getting around it. So why not inform society about a minority that people do not much know about. Speak up for the little community that I am apart of were most of my family is not.

How?
There is much history behind being a left-handed person in a right-handed society. These three books show how society came about were the left-hand became evil and were the right-hand is a powerful symbol. One book talks about the history of the left-hand in a style of rebellion, another is all about the history of the right-hand in a style of old history, and the third book is left and right coming together yet still the difference in how society is today.

Self Promo
What?
Branding myself and promoting my skills and ideas. Making a name for myself as a designer and trying to stand out from everyone else. Creating a logo so people can recognize the logo with my work and design skills.

Why?
Spreading my name all over so people will know who I am. People can see my work and recognize it. The design and ideas that I have come up will be connected to my name. People can see what projects I have done and see what I can do. I am promoting myself to hopefully work on something bigger and meaningful in the future.

How?
I took my long typical name and played around with many typefaces to see which one fits my personality and make it unique. Finally narrowing it down, creating a logo from my name and applying to many objects.

Angry Book
What?
What you think will be a typical book about anger and text that you have to read to try to make you calm down. Not in this case, it is a special book were you can destroy it and take your anger out on it. It is not meant to promote violent anger but just an escape for letting it out. It is a book about a serious topic but created in a funny way.

Why?
Who would not want to destroy a book when you are pumped up with anger and just want to destroy something. This book would be a thing to grab, open, and hopefully get your mind off your built up anger. For some people who keep their anger to themselves and keep quiet about it is unhealthy. So to release what anger they have in their own time and privacy, they can always refer to the book. Even if you are not angry, you can just open the book and enjoy the activities if you want.

How?
Researching everything up on anger and all the tips and tricks to release your anger in a healthy way. In the end creating a book in an opposite form were you do not just read the book but destroying the book. Creating these fun little activities for you to try and get your mind into a different space. Turning a very serious emotion into something fun. I even took some idioms about anger and put them into a literal reference within the activities.

Water Pollution Poster / Homeless Poster (Campaign Posters)
What?
Posters touching on serious topics that our society is the result of. Making people aware of these serious problems and showing people what most people ignore everyday. Showing the results of our actions and what we all take for granted. Water pollution and homelessness are two huge topics within our society that needs to be acknowledged by all. We see it everyday were most people ignore the problem and very little are actually helping the community thrive to be a better place to live.

Why?
This poster is to show a statement for all that throwing garbage in the ocean is killing many animals and even killing ourselves. We are polluting the ocean water that is important to many people. These posters are also a way of speaking for the sea animals if they had a voice to stop destroying their home.
Showing the importance of how bad homelessness has been in our own society. Informing people that the homeless shelters are not even safe for them and the result being that they make the streets their home. As regular class people we are complaining that they are everywhere, yet we aren’t even doing anything about it.

How?
Taking the problem of water pollution and acknowledging that we are throwing garbage in their home, so what if sea life threw garbage in our home. It is like giving a voice for sea life if they had a say of not wanting things that would harm their life. So I took the imagery of garbage being thrown in our homes that we live in day and night. A place we always feel safe in and sea life should feel safe in there homes as well.
The poster about homelessness is taking were they live which is the streets and showing people that their home is outside. Not a steady safe place to consider home, but they have no choice. They do the best they can and try to survive with what they have.
Both posters are to bring awareness with these serious topics and show that these things should not be ignored. Showing people that pollution and homelessness are apart of our society and are becoming worse everyday we do nothing about it.

Guitar
What?
A 3D model of a guitar made from a memorable moment I had that summer from going to Warped Tour. Made out of materials around the house, combining regular materials to represent parts of the guitar.

Why?
The best moment of that summer was going to Vans Warped Tour which is an all day music festival. So I decided to make a guitar to represent that memorable moment. I felt making a guitar represented the music festival most people most bands that perform are rock bands and they always have a guitarist playing.

How?
Using materials around the house, I was able to create a unique guitar were the shape of the body is the rock sign. The materials are wires for the strings, construction paper for the body, thumb tacs for tuning, beads, and cardboard for the neck.

Russian Constructionism
What?
Taking one poster and constructing it 100 and more different times in different variations. Not knowing what the poster is about, but to just reconstruct it any way possible. In 4 stages were the first 25 we had to keep all elements of the poster, next 25 was changing colors of the same elements, next was adding any pictures we wanted, and the last was we could do whatever we wanted with the poster.

Why?
Made 100 and more different posters with the same elements because why not. It was for us to think outside of the box with the same elements given to us. Giving us the challenge that we could create something 100 different ways and getting us to produce many in a limited time.

How?
I stuck to the instructions given to me but by the time I was free to do what I wanted, I was tired of making these variation posters. But I stuck with it and started creating posters without even thinking. Then realizing that some of those posters had good elements within them. Once I was done with all the posters, I was amazed that I was able to stick with the project and create as many as I did.

Mary Poppins Title Sequence (Motion)
What?
Recreating a title sequence from any movie and creating my own design and style to it. I chose the 1964 movie Mary Poppins opening title sequence. Taking the original title credits and creating my own design to the whole thing. Giving it a modern day look with still having the elements from the movie.

Why?
This is one of my favorite movies to watch when I was a child and still is today. The opening title sequence is just an overhead look of London through the clouds and Mary Poppins appearing. The credits themselves scroll through without any affects. So I decided to take the elements that Mary Poppins has within the movie like her umbrella and a chimney sweep and incorporate it within the credits. Giving a modern day look to an old classic movie that is still loved today.

How?

Creating most of my illustrations in illustrator and giving an effect of chalk because the movie is all about imagination and being a child. Not taking things so seriously, yet getting things done within the movie. I wanted to include the elements that make up the movie because those are key elements within the movie that I feel is what makes the movie special in its own way. Then applying motion effects to the whole thing to make it feel like an opening title sequence for the movie.
