Through the Viewfinder (I am a Story Project)
What?
Who doesn’t love their bedroom? I have grown up in the same bedroom all 21 years of my life and it has gone through many changes along side with me. From a complete room makeover to, my sister moving out, and now my own little space to call my own. Just from the images of my room till this day, it says many things about my personality and the type of person I am. Come into my personal sanctuary to get to know me.
Why?
To tell my story of my own child perspective, I invite you into my bedroom. I feel it is the most personal space anyone has to offer of themselves. I want you to feel like you are in my room and wanting to know more about me just by seeing all the things I have. My story within my own room with camera angles from a child’s point of view. This story is to bring you back to when you were a child and seeing your viewpoint completely different from how you see reality today.
How?
A child’s perspective were an adult never wonders. In a room that I have grown up in all my life has many different viewpoints. Taking these images bought me back to being a child and that is what this video is about. Bringing myself out of the box and seeing a room that I have gone to everyday in a different perspective. I captured many images but selecting the few that told my story. Collecting all the images and creating a frame by frame video with childlike music representing the outlook of my bedroom. Giving people more of an insight of who I am.
A Fleeting Moment (Projection Project)
What?
Projection project about my own experience with death. Death can take an emotional toll on a person and everyone experiences it in their life. It is my own story of how I felt about the passing of my grandmother and my dog. How their deaths still linger within me from time to time and how overwhelming the feeling can be when losing loved ones.
Why?
It was a way to express my emotions outside myself and do something that was so sensitive to me that scared me every time I talked about it. Expressing my story through the projection and onto the wall; showing my emotions to the class and letting it all out. Really coming out of my comfort zone and overbearing this weight of fear. Through the projection really expressed my story and the weight it has over me.
How?
My story of my grandmother and dogs death splashed in a projection across the wall. My own experience of death repeated in print and projection in different typefaces with black and white shapes. Something completely out of my comfort zone and a very sensitive topic for myself. That repetition representing the overwhelming weight of how losing someone means to me. Taking lots of pictures and videos to capture the moment. Finalizing all the videos to capture in one that would tell my story. With additive affect of music within the video and an addition of images put into a coffee top magazine as the final project.
Left-handed Museum
What?
It is hard being in a society were you are the minority and have to form to it. Everything in society is made to be comfortable for a right-handed person but very little is made specially for left-handed people. Left-handed people have to adjust to every object to do just what a right-handed person can do. Only some objects are made to feel like we are apart of society but in some cases it makes us stand out more like that one left-handed desk in school. So showing society how different a world would be if it was a left-handed society.
Why?
Some people I know wonder how it is to be left-handed and most do not know much about being left-handed. They do not know the history, the facts, and the myths behind being left-handed in a right-handed society. Me being a left-hander myself know from experience the struggle that left-handed people have to go through everyday. It becomes a struggle cause we have to form to society and there is no way of getting around it. So why not inform society about a minority that people do not much know about. Speak up for the little community that I am apart of were most of my family is not.
How?
There is much history behind being a left-handed person in a right-handed society. These three books show how society came about were the left-hand became evil and were the right-hand is a powerful symbol. One book talks about the history of the left-hand in a style of rebellion, another is all about the history of the right-hand in a style of old history, and the third book is left and right coming together yet still the difference in how society is today.
Self Promo
What?
Branding myself and promoting my skills and ideas. Making a name for myself as a designer and trying to stand out from everyone else. Creating a logo so people can recognize the logo with my work and design skills.
Why?
Spreading my name all over so people will know who I am. People can see my work and recognize it. The design and ideas that I have come up will be connected to my name. People can see what projects I have done and see what I can do. I am promoting myself to hopefully work on something bigger and meaningful in the future.
How?
I took my long typical name and played around with many typefaces to see which one fits my personality and make it unique. Finally narrowing it down, creating a logo from my name and applying to many objects.
Angry Book
What?
What you think will be a typical book about anger and text that you have to read to try to make you calm down. Not in this case, it is a special book were you can destroy it and take your anger out on it. It is not meant to promote violent anger but just an escape for letting it out. It is a book about a serious topic but created in a funny way.
Why?
Who would not want to destroy a book when you are pumped up with anger and just want to destroy something. This book would be a thing to grab, open, and hopefully get your mind off your built up anger. For some people who keep their anger to themselves and keep quiet about it is unhealthy. So to release what anger they have in their own time and privacy, they can always refer to the book. Even if you are not angry, you can just open the book and enjoy the activities if you want.
How?
Researching everything up on anger and all the tips and tricks to release your anger in a healthy way. In the end creating a book in an opposite form were you do not just read the book but destroying the book. Creating these fun little activities for you to try and get your mind into a different space. Turning a very serious emotion into something fun. I even took some idioms about anger and put them into a literal reference within the activities.
Water Pollution Poster / Homeless Poster (Campaign Posters)
What?
Posters touching on serious topics that our society is the result of. Making people aware of these serious problems and showing people what most people ignore everyday. Showing the results of our actions and what we all take for granted. Water pollution and homelessness are two huge topics within our society that needs to be acknowledged by all. We see it everyday were most people ignore the problem and very little are actually helping the community thrive to be a better place to live.
Why?
This poster is to show a statement for all that throwing garbage in the ocean is killing many animals and even killing ourselves. We are polluting the ocean water that is important to many people. These posters are also a way of speaking for the sea animals if they had a voice to stop destroying their home.
Showing the importance of how bad homelessness has been in our own society. Informing people that the homeless shelters are not even safe for them and the result being that they make the streets their home. As regular class people we are complaining that they are everywhere, yet we aren’t even doing anything about it.
How?
Taking the problem of water pollution and acknowledging that we are throwing garbage in their home, so what if sea life threw garbage in our home. It is like giving a voice for sea life if they had a say of not wanting things that would harm their life. So I took the imagery of garbage being thrown in our homes that we live in day and night. A place we always feel safe in and sea life should feel safe in there homes as well.
The poster about homelessness is taking were they live which is the streets and showing people that their home is outside. Not a steady safe place to consider home, but they have no choice. They do the best they can and try to survive with what they have.
Both posters are to bring awareness with these serious topics and show that these things should not be ignored. Showing people that pollution and homelessness are apart of our society and are becoming worse everyday we do nothing about it.
Guitar
What?
A 3D model of a guitar made from a memorable moment I had that summer from going to Warped Tour. Made out of materials around the house, combining regular materials to represent parts of the guitar.
Why?
The best moment of that summer was going to Vans Warped Tour which is an all day music festival. So I decided to make a guitar to represent that memorable moment. I felt making a guitar represented the music festival most people most bands that perform are rock bands and they always have a guitarist playing.
How?
Using materials around the house, I was able to create a unique guitar were the shape of the body is the rock sign. The materials are wires for the strings, construction paper for the body, thumb tacs for tuning, beads, and cardboard for the neck.
Russian Constructionism
What?
Taking one poster and constructing it 100 and more different times in different variations. Not knowing what the poster is about, but to just reconstruct it any way possible. In 4 stages were the first 25 we had to keep all elements of the poster, next 25 was changing colors of the same elements, next was adding any pictures we wanted, and the last was we could do whatever we wanted with the poster.
Why?
Made 100 and more different posters with the same elements because why not. It was for us to think outside of the box with the same elements given to us. Giving us the challenge that we could create something 100 different ways and getting us to produce many in a limited time.
How?
I stuck to the instructions given to me but by the time I was free to do what I wanted, I was tired of making these variation posters. But I stuck with it and started creating posters without even thinking. Then realizing that some of those posters had good elements within them. Once I was done with all the posters, I was amazed that I was able to stick with the project and create as many as I did.
Mary Poppins Title Sequence (Motion)
What?
Recreating a title sequence from any movie and creating my own design and style to it. I chose the 1964 movie Mary Poppins opening title sequence. Taking the original title credits and creating my own design to the whole thing. Giving it a modern day look with still having the elements from the movie.
Why?
This is one of my favorite movies to watch when I was a child and still is today. The opening title sequence is just an overhead look of London through the clouds and Mary Poppins appearing. The credits themselves scroll through without any affects. So I decided to take the elements that Mary Poppins has within the movie like her umbrella and a chimney sweep and incorporate it within the credits. Giving a modern day look to an old classic movie that is still loved today.
How?
Creating most of my illustrations in illustrator and giving an effect of chalk because the movie is all about imagination and being a child. Not taking things so seriously, yet getting things done within the movie. I wanted to include the elements that make up the movie because those are key elements within the movie that I feel is what makes the movie special in its own way. Then applying motion effects to the whole thing to make it feel like an opening title sequence for the movie.
I'm really looking forward to your anger book. I can't remember if you have this in your book already but I think it would be cool if there was a page or two where you could write all your feelings out in a letter to someone you are angry with and instead of giving it to them you could rip it up instead. Or even like a fake email.
