Dear all,
I am trying to repair the materials for the following project. The project is about Nostalgia, so I have listed some questions to ask foreigners in the U.S.
If you have a minute, can you tell me is there anything else I should add on before I actually do the interview? Thank you.
1. How long have you been in the U.S.?
2. How old were you when you moved here?
3. When was the last time you visited your hometown?
4. What do you remember of your hometown? Can you describe your hometown?
5. Anything important for you in your hometown still?
6. Do you want to go back? Just visit or live there? Why?
Hi Chao,
ReplyDeleteI think you chose very interesting, sensitive topic for your project.
When using an interview as a tool we are looking to get a genuine, spontaneous material. You do not want phrases and cliche answers. That makes your job of interview both sensitive and creative.
Questions 1-3 address the basic. They will give you an insight into some basic data and demographics.
- How long have you been in the U.S.?
- How old were you when you moved here?
- When was the last time you visited your hometown?
You might to add question - where is a person coming from. Later on you may or may not include it into your project.
Other questions go deeper into the subject matter. I also added some questions as examples:
- What is the first memory (image, sound or sent ) that comes to your mind when you think about your hometown?
- What/who do you miss the most (from your hometown)
- When / in which situations you start thinking about your hometown?
- Is there anything / anybody important for you in your hometown still?
- Are you thinking of going back? or Would you like to go back if you could?
- Just to visit or to live there? Why?
- Think about situations in your present life and routine when memories of your hometown occur
- or What was the last time you were thinking about home?
- If you are missing your home - what is stopping you from moving back? Or what needs to happen so you would go back?
- What is Nostalgia for you?
Also you might like to ask more abstract questions like:
- What is the color/colors of you hometown?
- The sent of you hometown?
- The sound(s) of you hometown?
Important things when designing the interview:
The order of questions
How do you plan to execute the interview? Written? Audio or Video?
How do you select people to participate in the process?
More to come!
Nada
So helpful, thank you so much.
